Asthma clinical trials in Westchester, IL

Research studies for people living with asthma, run at one clinic on Roosevelt Road in Westchester — about 15 miles west of downtown Chicago.

What asthma is

Asthma is a long-term condition of the airways, the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. In asthma they are inflamed and sensitive. When something sets them off, they swell, the muscles around them tighten and they fill with mucus, which leaves less room for air.

Most people manage it with inhalers — a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms, and for many a daily controller as well. For some, asthma stays in the background most of the time. For others it keeps flaring up even while they take their medicine every day.

This page describes research studies. It is not medical advice, and taking part in a study is not a substitute for your own doctor’s care.

What taking part involves

  1. A phone call

A coordinator calls to talk through your history and answer your questions. Nothing is decided on the call.

  2. A free screening visit

At the clinic, with breathing tests. It decides whether you qualify, and it commits you to nothing.

  3. Study visits

If you qualify and choose to join, you come to the clinic on a schedule set out in advance. How often, and for how long, depends on the study.

  4. No cost, and compensation

Study-related care and tests are at no cost. Compensation is for your time and travel, provided per completed visit, and never contingent on study results.

Clinical research studies are reviewed by an independent ethics board. Taking part is voluntary and you may stop at any time. Only a screening visit can determine whether you qualify. This is not medical advice and no treatment is guaranteed.

Questions about taking part

Do I need to have been diagnosed with asthma?

Yes. The asthma studies here are for people whose asthma has been diagnosed by a doctor. A coordinator goes through your history with you by phone, and the free screening visit confirms whether you qualify.

Which study would I be in?

That depends on how your asthma behaves and which medicines you take. One study is for asthma that is generally managed but still present; another is for adults whose asthma still flares up on a daily controller. You do not have to work it out — the coordinator will.

Can a teenager take part?

One asthma study is open from age 12, with a parent’s or guardian’s consent for anyone under 18. The other is for adults aged 18 to 75.

Does it cost anything to take part?

No. Study-related visits, tests and study medication are provided at no cost. No insurance is needed, and we never ask for payment information.

Will I get a placebo?

Some studies include one. Where they do, we say so before you agree to anything.

Can I stop taking part?

Yes — at any time, for any reason, without penalty. Your regular medical care is not affected.
