COPD clinical trials in Westchester, IL

Research studies for people living with COPD — emphysema and chronic bronchitis — run at one clinic on Roosevelt Road in Westchester, about 15 miles west of downtown Chicago.

What COPD is

COPD — chronic obstructive pulmonary disease — is a long-term lung condition that makes it harder to breathe air out. It is the name for emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which often occur together.

It usually develops slowly, over years, and smoking is the most common cause. Many people with COPD also have flare-ups: days or weeks when breathing gets noticeably worse and extra medicine is needed.

This page describes research studies. It is not medical advice, and taking part in a study is not a substitute for your own doctor’s care.

What taking part involves

  1. A phone call

A coordinator calls to talk through your history and answer your questions. Nothing is decided on the call.

  2. A free screening visit

At the clinic, with breathing (lung function) tests — and, for one study, a blood test. It decides whether you qualify, and it commits you to nothing.

  3. Study visits

If you qualify and choose to join, you come to the clinic on a schedule set out in advance. How often, and for how long, depends on the study.

  4. No cost, and compensation

Study-related care and tests are at no cost. Compensation is for your time and travel, provided per completed visit, and never contingent on study results.

Clinical research studies are reviewed by an independent ethics board. Taking part is voluntary and you may stop at any time. Only a screening visit can determine whether you qualify. This is not medical advice and no treatment is guaranteed.

Questions about taking part

I have COPD and asthma. Can I take part?

The COPD studies here are for people whose main diagnosis is COPD. If your main diagnosis is asthma, our asthma studies may be the ones to look at — the coordinator can tell you which.

What happens at the screening visit?

It is free and it includes lung function testing — breathing tests that measure how much air you can blow out, and how fast. For the Type 2 inflammation study it also includes a blood test. The screening visit decides whether you qualify, and it commits you to nothing.

What does joining the interest list mean?

A study that is opening soon is not enrolling yet. Join the interest list and a coordinator calls you before enrolment opens — interest-list patients are screened first. Joining commits you to nothing.

Does it cost anything to take part?

No. Study-related visits, tests and study medication are provided at no cost. No insurance is needed, and we never ask for payment information.

Will I get a placebo?

Some studies include one. Where they do, we say so before you agree to anything.

Can I stop taking part?

Yes — at any time, for any reason, without penalty. Your regular medical care is not affected.
